10 questions to reflect upon before you take a decision to join consulting

My article earlier this week on 5 wrong motivations to get into a consulting career (https://lnkd.in/dUuUdxBf) triggered several conversations. Thanks for reading the article and writing to me. On request of a few of you, I am posting only the 10 reflection questions. They are collated from various places in the article.

10 questions to reflect upon before you take a decision to join consulting:

1. Consulting has long work hours and a demanding lifestyle. Is ‘money’ motivation enough for you to sustain through this challenging career?
2. Tech, Pharma etc., can pay higher than consulting. Are you sure you don’t want to consider them?
3. Will you enjoy working every day in a fast-paced, analytical and data-oriented environment?
4. Consulting projects are increasingly implementation-oriented. One month of strategy followed up by 3-4 months of implementation is a common format. Will you enjoy the non-glamorous part of consulting?
5. Constant travel affects your health and disrupts family time. Are you fine with that?
6. Exciting business class travel is rare – normally for shorter distances you travel economy class, for remote factor visits you travel by train/car/bus etc. Can you do that?
7. What are your own values, interests, and goals? Would consulting career cater to those?
8. Trends change; if consulting becomes ‘out of trend’ then will you leave consulting?
9. Will joining a default (no other option) career give you fulfilment?
10. Can you ensure broad ( and expected) exposure in consulting career – increasingly consulting companies encourage consultants to specialise as early as the second year, there is always a possibility that due to business dynamics, you might get staffed on similar projects back to back. Will that work?
